Jeff Hancock, a sales manager at Jewel-Osco, helped spearhead the company’s collaboration with VOSS and Voss Foundation’s 31 Days to Make a Difference campaign. Recently, we reached out to Jeff to learn more about his tenure at Jewel-Osco and why it was so important for him to participate in 31 Days to Make a Difference.

Jewel-Osco Supports Access to Safe Water

When the VOSS team presented the 31 Days to Make a Difference campaign to me, I knew it was one we needed to support. Access to clean drinking water is a fundamental resource and one we take for granted. It is so cool to know that at the end of the day, the results of this campaign will actually help a village.

At the heart of Jewel-Osco’s community engagement is the idea that being a good corporate citizen is an ongoing responsibility. We know being a good neighbor also means providing for our customers beyond our store’s walls and even outside of the communities we serve.  It is important for Jewel-Osco to support causes that are also important to our customers. Even though we do not have store locations in Africa; we have customers and neighbors who have family or friends in the region.

Jewel-Osco’s Commitment to Community

One of the things I am most proud of as a Jewel-Osco associate is how we give back to the communities in all of the areas we operate.  We partner with many non-profit groups. One of the largest partnerships is with our local food banks and pantries. Jewel-Osco is in the food business so of course we see a reason to get involved and support the mission to help people in need.  We do this in many different ways including our fresh food donation programs, in-store fundraising, food drives and volunteer programs to pack or distribute food.  Our associates are so passionate about this partnership and proud to know they are directly helping to feed hungry people in their communities.

In addition to hunger relief causes and our partnerships with the food banks, Jewel-Osco supports initiatives related to education, cancer research, veterans support and programs for people with disabilities. Personally, I appreciate the relationships with my vendors as we have expanded our partnerships outside of our stores and are making a direct and positive impact in the community. Most recently I’ve had the opportunity to work with Feed the Children, a partnership with PepsiCo & Frito-Lay, to pack and distribute food to 800 families. I also participated in a KaBoom playground build with Dr. Pepper/Snapple group.

What it’s Like Working for Jewel-Osco

I have experienced an amazing and diverse 42 years (so far) with Jewel-Osco.  This has lead me on journey to work in a variety of positions and different operating markets in the Midwest.  In my 10 years as a sales manager, I’ve supported most of what would be considered ‘grocery’ categories and products.  I really enjoy working in the beverage category and seeing the big shift and innovation in products.  It is rewarding to work with companies like VOSS who, like Jewel- Osco, feel the importance of giving back and helping others in need.
