It’s so important to us to be able to follow up with our project partners, to see how Voss Foundation clean water projects are impacting the community – even years after project completion! In our 2012 video, we noted that the opening ceremony is just the beginning – Voss Foundation clean water projects are an ongoing engine of growth in our communities, as we can see through the Voss Foundation Ripple Effect. One and a half years after construction of the village well in Kalebuka, located in the Katanga region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it continues to play a central role in the life of the village, serving roughly 8,000 people each year. Before the Voss Foundation clean water project, funded by Give a Drop with Virgin Unite and Jewel’s Project Clean Water, community members used to walk 3-4 kilometers to get water. Now that distance has been cut by more than half, with an average walk ranging from 0-2 kilometers.

Mathilde Mumba Mulongo [pictured above]is 20 years old and just finished technical school. She lives 600m from the well and has been using it since October 2012 for drinking water, cooking and washing. She has 6 brothers and sisters and they are all very happy to have a well that is reliable and close to them.

Here is what Adriana Henriquez, the CFO of Georges Malaika Foundation (our implementing partner in the DRC) had to say about the project:

Visiting the second Voss [Foundation]-sponsored well in Kalebuka, which serves the entire village, was an exciting part of my trip to Lubumbashi. I was able to see, first-hand, how the well has become part of a daily routine and an important and integral part of village life. There is a constant stream of villagers, young and old, that come and await their turns to fill a wide array of colorful containers. As they wait, the adults chat and children play around this centerpiece that is providing them with clean-water. It is absolutely impressive to see the quality and clarity of the water and the way that it is pumping improved health into this beautiful community.
