On August 3rd, Voss Foundation brought our celebrated Women Helping Women (WHW) program “out East” for the first-ever WHW Beach event in at Osteria Salina in East Hampton, New York. Hosted by Cristina Cuomo and Andrea Greeven Douzet, the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher, respectively, of sponsor, Modern Luxury’s Beach Magazine, the luncheon was an unqualified success. The day raised funds for and awareness of projects that bring clean water and sanitation to women and their communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Upon arrival, guests shopped our renowned African Bazaar, a collection of handmade jewelry, accessories, toys and home items from the countries where we work. The Bazaar is curated annually by an African Bazaar Committee comprised of fashion editors, stylists, photographers and tastemakers.
After everyone sat down to lunch, Andrea Greeven Douzet opened the program with welcoming remarks. A passionate supporter of Voss Foundation, Andrea explained to the crowd why our mission resonates so much with her as a woman and mother of girls. She was followed by our Executive Director, Kara Gerson, who first thanked Andrea for her vision in conceiving of and executing the event. Kara asked guests to imagine they were a young girl in Africa – first before a Voss Foundation project had been implemented in her community, and then after clean water, sanitation, and hygiene were available to her and her family.
We were especially pleased that several guests brought their young daughters, as it is women and girls who benefit the most from Voss Foundation’s clean water, sanitation, and hygiene projects in Sub-Saharan Africa. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to educate girls on the challenges faced by their peers on another continent, as well as celebrate mothers and daughters in such a lovely way!
In addition to the beautiful, ethical, and exotic goods they bought at the African Bazaar, guests left with gifts from Caro Home, LifeIce, and La Semeuse. We grateful to all of our sponsors, including Sag Harbor Florist, who donated exquisite centerpieces; legendary fashion photographer Patrice Casanova; VOSS Water; and of course our hosts, host committee, and supporters. We hope to see everyone again soon at our Women Helping Women New York luncheon this Fall!
