On Tuesday, October 14th, nearly 100 guests gathered for lunch and shopping at the Ritz-Carlton in Nob Hill for our third annual Voss Foundation Women Helping Women San Francisco event. The luncheon recognized 2014 Women Helping Women Co-Honoree Kristy Caylor, Co-founder, President and Creative Director of Maiyet. Voss Foundation Board Member and Event Chair Charlot Diskerud Malin hosted the afternoon featuring Mistress of Ceremonies, Betty Yu of KPIX CBS San Francisco.
During the luncheon, we presented our dedicated 2014 Women Helping Women Project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, towards which 100% of proceeds go until it is fully funded. We launched our Women Helping Women US campaign in 2010 with a project in the DRC, and return once again in partnership with the Georges Malaika Foundation to provide access to clean, and safe drinking water with two more hand-pump boreholes to the community of Kalebuka.
Kristy gave an impassioned speech about the importance and impact of Maiyet’s, Nest’s Voss Foundation’s work, drawing on her extensive travels and experience with artisans around the world. She explained that artisans cannot create beautiful things, preserving their cultural heritage, and cannot earn money for their families and communities without their most basic needs of water, sanitation and hygiene met. Her talk was followed by a Q&A with her and our Executive Director Kara Gerson, moderated by Betty.
Our popular African Bazaar provided a colorful and lively setting, displaying artisan-made jewelry, scarves, baskets, and toys for sale to benefit our work – and further demonstrating the ripple effect of clean water! All items in the bazaar are purchased directly from artisans and markets in the communities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Liberia, Swaziland, and Uganda where we work. Thanks to Voss Foundation’s ongoing partnership with Maiyet partner Nest, many of these goods are made by the same artisans who create Maiyet’s fashion line!
Guests traveled from as far as Los Angeles, New York, and Norway to be and enjoyed generously donated Prescott Ashe Estate Winery wines and VOSS water. Our media partner was Red Carpet Bay Area. We are happy to say the afternoon raised nearly $40,000!
