This Spring, Voss Foundation, Virgin Unite, and Jewel‘s Project Clean Water will celebrate five fruitful years of collaboration on the Give A Drop campaign to raise money for Voss Foundation’s water projects in Sub-Saharan Africa!
In 1997, recording artist, author, actress, and philanthropist Jewel founded Project Clean Water after experiencing for herself what it was like to live without access to clean water. Several years later, she joined forces with Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Unite, the non-profit foundation of the Virgin Group. In 2009, Project Clean Water and Virgin Unite were so impressed with Voss Foundation’s work and method, that they decided to team up with us to select and manage the clean water projects for which they were fundraising.
We have also raised awareness of the need for clean water, sanitation, and hygiene as a means to enable community-driven development. Jewel has been able to use her celebrity for good, holding numerous charitable concerts, speaking about Give A Drop on the news (and see interview above) and social media, and even designing limited-edition jewelry as a fundraiser. Virgin Unite manages the Give A Drop website and Text A Drop program, channeling tens of thousands of dollars towards our vital work.
Most importantly, our efforts are sustainable and we know they are paying off. We receive regular reports from our partners on the ground telling that the wells continue to function and change their communities for the better. The students at the Georges Malaika School for Girls even sent us a Valentine!
We are in the process of planning some very exciting celebrations of this anniversary and can’t wait to tell you all about them! In the meantime, you can read all about our Give A Drop work over the years.
