UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted in a message today, that “the third Millennium Development Goal – to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment – is central to all the rest. When women are denied the opportunity to better themselves and their societies, we all lose.”
Water is inextricably linked to women’s empowerment in rural sub-Saharan Africa, as the portage of water is often a woman’s primary task.
Voss Foundation programs like Women Helping Women and Jewel’s limited-edition Pennyroyal necklaces help reduce the time African women and girls spend carrying water, so they can go to school and participate in their communities’ economic and social activities.
As the Secretary-General says, “Until women and girls are liberated from poverty and injustice, all our goals – peace, security, sustainable development – stand in jeopardy.”
